Along with some Scandinavian countries, Spain and Slovenia, the Czech Republic has been one of the European countries with the lowest infant mortality rate. In 2006, the mortality rate was 3.3 per 1000 live births, or only slightly higher. In 2007, 315 babies were born dead, and the rate was 2.74 per 1000 births, compared to 2.82 per 1000 births in 2006. In the 1950s, 50 to 65 babies were born dead per 1000 births, while in the 1970s the number decreased to approximately 10 per 1000 births.
