Western leaders have denounced Russia's recognition of the independence of two rebel Georgian regions.
United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said President Dimitry Medvedev's decision to recognise Abkhazia and South Ossetia was "extremely unfortunate." French officials say their country, which currently holds the European Union presidency, is pushing for the EU to condemn the move.
