French President Nicolas Sarkozy has paid homage to 124 civilians, mostly women and children, who were killed in a Nazi atrocity during World War II.
The Maillй massacre on August 25, 1944 has long been overshadowed in France's national memory because on the same day Paris was liberated from German occupation. Sarkozy said the ceremony was meant to right a historic wrong. 28 survivors took part in the commemoration in the village south of the city of Tours. No German soldiers or officers were ever tried for the killings.
