France's interior minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, says that there is no hope of finding alive three Swiss and five Austrian climbers buried by an avalanche on Sunday near Mont Blanc.
Rescuers in the French Alps had already suspended their search for the eight mountaineers for fear of more snow slides. Another eight alpinists were rescued or managed to free themselves from the avalanche after what one survivor said was a wall of ice that came down on them early on Sunday morning.
