Washington's top diplomat in China has pressed the government to immediately free foreign pro-Tibet activists jailed for protesting during the Olympics.
He also criticized Beijing for failing to use the games to show greater tolerance and openness. Chinese police have sentenced at least 10 foreigners to 10 days in jail for protesting during the games, including eight Americans, a German and a British citizen. British and US officials are seeking the quick release of their citizens. In Nepals capital Katmandu, around 2,000 exiled Tibetans have protested against the Chinese rule in their homeland. They were granted official permission on condition they did not go near the Chinese embassy.
