The Afghan interior ministry reports that 76 civilians, including women but mostly children, have been killed in a coalition airstrike in western Afghanistan.
US-led coalition forces confirmed that they did indeed carry out an operation in Herat province but that they had killed 30 Taliban militants. An Afghan army official corroborated the death toll of 30, but said five of those were civilians. Independent confirmation of the conflicting stories is not possible and reflects continuing disagreements between the Afghan government and the US-led coalition over airstrikes and resulting civilian casualties.
