Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari says Baghdad and Washington are very close to reaching an agreement to extend the presence of US troops in the country beyond the end of this year.
The deal would replace a United Nations Security Council mandate for US forces to operate in the country, which expires in December. Zebari was speaking following a meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who was in Baghdad on an unannounced visit. Zebari also said that the agreement would be temporary and would include what he described as "time horizons" for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
