A plane carrying the bodies of 10 French soldiers who were killed in an ambush in Afghanistan earlier this week has arrived in Paris. Eleven of the 21 French soldiers who were injured in the same attack, arrived in France earlier in the day and were immediately taken to hospital for further treatment.
Several Taliban insurgents were also killed or injured in the gun battle that broke out after the ambush, which occurred around 50 kilometres east of the Afghan capital, Kabul. President Nicolas Sarkozy has travelled to Kabul where he met with French soldiers serving in Afghanistan with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The French president paid his respects at a military chapel and expressed his government's continuing support for both the troops and their mission.
