A suicide car bomb outside a US military base in eastern Afghanistan has killed nine civilian labourers and wounded more than a dozen others.
The attack in the town of Khost was claimed by the Taliban and coincided with Independence Day celebrations in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces were able to prevent a second suicide bombing at the base by killing the attackers before they could detonate their explosives. More than 7,000 police have been deployed in Kabul for the Independence Day celebrations amid fears of further attacks.
