A global conference on water issues has kicked off in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
Officials, scientists and politicians from 140 countries are meeting to discuss ways of increasing clean water supplies. A study unveiled on Monday at World Water Week highlighted that people in developing countries are facing growing health risks caused by the widespread use of raw sewage to irrigate crops. Non-governmental organizations say international efforts to increase clean water supplies are being held back by corruption and stressed the need to increase transparency in the water production chain. The United Nations has named 2008 the International Year of Sanitation.
