Iran says it has sent its first dummy satellite into space using a domestically built rocket.
The Safir, or Ambassador, satellite launcher was tested in anticipation of sending up another satellite at a later date which is to gather atmospheric data. Iran says it has a long-standing goal of developing a space programme, but Washington described the test as "troubling". The ballistics technology necessary for launching objects into space can also be used for long-range missiles. Western countries accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear programme, a charge Tehran denies.
