Afghanistan has mobilised 7,000 police officers in the capital Kabul, amid a wave of violence ahead of Monday's Independence Day celebrations.
At least 60 people have been reported killed in a series of clashes across the country's south. In one incident, a battle raged for several hours when militants ambushed a convoy near the town of Qalat in Zabul province. Government officials said five private security guards and 28 Taliban militants were killed in the clash. Also in the south, officials in Kandahar province say a roadside bomb hit a police jeep late on Saturday, killing 10 officers in one of the deadliest recent attacks against security forces.
