German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the urgent withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgia, at a press conference in Tbilisi.
Merkel met Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili for talks amid further diplomatic efforts to end the crisis in the Caucasus. Saakashvili said Georgia would not give up the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Merkel, Medvedev seek continuity in relations ... ceasefire. Earlier, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said his country's forces would begin withdrawing on Monday. The conflict began over a week ago when Georgia launched an offensive to retake the de-facto independent region of South Ossetia, and Moscow intervened to back the separatists.
