Phelps took the 100-meter butterfly by just a fraction of a second ahead of Milorad Cavic of Serbia; the first race in which he did not set a world record. In other Olympic news, Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe took gold in the women's 200-meter backstroke in world record time. Germany won the silver and bronze medals in the men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol competition. Gold went to Oleksandr Petriv of Ukraine.
