German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi for talks about the situation in Georgia with President Dmitri Medvedev.
Merkel was expected to criticise the Russian invasion into Georgia as excessive, while pressing for Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia. Ahead of the trip, the German government said Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty were not up for discussion during the talks.
