13.08.2008 - Czech extremist association to appeal registration ban

The ministry justified the decision, saying the National Militia calls for armed resistance, the toppling of the government and intends to become stronger than the police, which is at variance with the democratic society principles. Kopal said the ministry's decision had been caused by the journalists' "inflammatory campaign." The National Militia has filed a complaint against reporters of the Tyden weekly. The association has also sent a letter with questions to Interior Minister Ivan Langer (senior ruling Civic Democrats, ODS). The National Militia has been the third militant group on the Czech ultra-right political scene. The extra-parliamentary extremist National Party (NS) established the paramilitary National Guard some time ago and the ultra-right Workers' Party set up the Defence Corps. the association does not want to be an armed group. "It is up to every citizen whether he/she will possess a weapon," he said. However, he admitted the association supports the personal possession of arms. Kopal has been active in several ultra-right parties and movements, such as the Patriotic Front, the National Party, the Right Alternative and the National Social Bloc. He also supported the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. In February Kopal helped organise a demonstration in support of skinhead Vlastimil Pechanec who was sentenced to 17 years in prison for having murdered a Romany.
