A senior US government scientist has reportedly committed suicide just as prosecutors were about to charge him with carrying out a series of attacks using the biological weapon anthrax in 2001.
The Los Angeles Times newspaper identified the man as Bruce Ivins and said he had worked for the last 18 years at government biodefence research laboratories near Washington DC. The paper said the 62-year-old had been informed of his impending arrest shortly before his death on Tuesday. The anthrax was sent by post to media organisations and politicians shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. The anthrax-laced letters killed five people and caused illness in 17 others.
