German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed a Turkish court's decision not to ban Turkey's ruling party for undermining secularism.
A spokesperson for Merkel's office said the chancellor personally conveyed her relief to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying stability and democratic order in Turkey were central concerns. A top Turkish prosecutor had accused the ruling AK Party of wanting to turn Turkey into an Islamic state. The Constitutional Court imposed financial sanctions on the AKP, but fell one vote short of banning it outright. Turkey is a NATO ally, as well as a major partner for Germany and the European Union.
