UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has nominated South African judge Navanethem Pillay to serve as the next United Nations high commissioner for human rights.
Pillay currently serves as an appeals judge with the International Criminal Court, where she has been since 2003. She was born in 1941 and is of Tamil descent. UN officials say her selection now goes to the General Assembly for consideration where she is likely to be approved at a meeting next Monday. She would replace Canadian, Louise Arbour.
