British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's ruling Labour Party has lost a parliamentary seat in a traditional Labour stronghold, further signalling the UK's dissatisfaction with its government.
Defeat in Thursday's poll in Scotland's Glasgow East constituency, which Labour won with a huge 13,500 majority at the 2005 election, will strengthen expectation that Labour's 11 years in power may be nearing an end and that it could be easily defeated at the next general election, due by 2010. The pro-independence Scottish National Party won the seat by 365 votes.
