US presidential candidate Barack Obama has called for a fresh start in transatlantic relations.
Speaking to an estimated 200,000 people in front of Berlin's Victory Column, Obama called on Europe to stand with the United States in bringing stability to Afghanistan and fighting threats from climate change to nuclear proliferation. Referring to the Berlin Wall that used to split the city into East and West during the Cold War, Obama emphasised that people around the globe had to unite in order to tackle world issues effectively. Earlier Obama met for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The Illinois senator arrived in Germany following visits to Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and Jordan.
