23.07.2008 - Czech PM praises environment minister for compromise policy

Topolanek told journalists after his visit to the Environment Ministry that it was Bursik, who is chairman of the junior governing Green Party (SZ), who in many cases considerably contributed to preserving the government cooperation between the ODS and SZ. Topolanek admitted Few Czechs satisfied with democracy - poll ...

that his and Bursik's views on environmental topics often differed. However, it is positive that Bursik can always find a compromise with Topolanek as well as the ministers for the ODS - Industry and Trade Minister Martin Riman and Transport Minister Ales Rebicek, Topolanek said. He said the ability of Bursik to find compromises with Riman and Rebicek was a major factor for the functioning of the government. Last week Bursik agreed with Rebicek that they would meet to discuss the reduction of lorry transport.

Previously, Bursik said the Greens could leave the cabinet over the topic. He reacted to the fact that Topolanek withdrew the proposal for the extension of the lorry ban, currently valid on Fridays, after his meeting with hauliers. Bursik told journalists today that climate protection would be his ministry's priority in the future. During its EU presidency in the first half of 2009 the Czech Republic will face a difficult task of the approval of a new package of climate-related laws that will define the details of the fight against the consequences of climate change. The Czech Environment Ministry wants to submit a draft new climate policy for the Czech Republic at the end of September, Bursik said.
