German wins fourth leg of Tour de France, takes yellow jersey ... intriguing stage 17 of the Tour de France.
Sastre made his surprise move on the famous L'Alpe-d'Huez and powered on to grab the overall lead from his CSC team-mate Frank Schleck of Luxembourg.
He leads Schleck by one minute 24 seconds, with Bernhard Kohl and Cadel Evans of Australia also in contention.
Evans remains the favourite to win the Tour because he is the best time trial rider of the leading challengers.
Stage 17 saw the riders tackle the 210.5km from Embrun to the top of L'Alpe-d'Huez. It is the final Alpine stage and toughest of the Tour de France, a gruelling trek with three huge climbs.
Samuel Sanchez of the Euskaltel team, finished second to make it a Spanish one-two, with Luxembourg's Andy Schleck coming home third for CSC.
