Ministers from the European Union, the United States and other key nations are holding a second round of crucial trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland, after the first day of WTO discussions ended inconclusively on Monday.
They are seeking to revitalise the stalled Doha round by securing a deal between wealthy industrialised nations and developing countries over trade barriers. The Doha round was launched in 2001 with the aim of bolstering the global economy and lowering trade barriers worldwide to allow poorer countries to export more. Many developing nations are calling on industrialised countries to cut their subsidies and tariffs for agricultural products, while Brussels and Washington want big emerging nations like China, India and Brazil to first open their economies.
