The Pope has urged young people to stay away from what he calls the "spiritual desert" spreading throughout the world.
Pope Benedict XVI was speaking to a vast audience in Sydney at the climax of the Catholic Church's World Youth Day celebrations.
He said people should build a new age free of greed, apathy and selfishness.
Earlier in the week the Pope criticised consumerism and popular culture, while on Saturday he apologised for the abuse of young people by Catholic clergy.
