Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe say they want to promote closer ties, after months of political tension.
Speaking after a one-day meeting in Venezuela, Chavez said that a new era of co-operation was dawning. The two leaders have clashed in the last eight months over the FARC, a leftist guerrilla group in Colombia. Chavez has in the past openly supported the FARC which has led a decades long insurgency against the Colombian government. But since the dramatic rescue of 15 FARC hostages, including Franco-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt, Chavez has distanced himself from the rebel group and sought closer ties with Uribe.
