Paroubek today visited two radar opponents, Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar, who have been on a hunger strike against the radar base for 17 days now. The United States wants to build the radar base and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland within its missile shield. The Czech-U.S. treaties are to be signed by July. The Central European elements are to protect the United States and a large part of the European continent against missiles that states like Iran might launch. Two thirds of the Czech public are still opposed to the radar base, according to the latest public opinion polls. Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg reacted to the CSSD news with the question whether he is still foreign minister of the Czech Republic or "Absurdistan," ministry spokeswoman Zuzana Opletalova said. "Mr Paroubek should have a look at the U.S. constitution because according to it the administrative ends with the president's resignation," Opletalova conveyed Schwarzenberg's words to CTK. The U.S. presidential election will be held in November. The treaties to be signed with the United States will be submitted to Czech parliament for approval.
