German dignitaries in Berlin have inaugurated a memorial dedicated to the tens of thousands of gays and lesbians who were persecuted and killed under Nazi rule.
Nazi Germany declared homosexuality an aberration that threatened the German race. The Berlin monument for homosexuals was ordered in 2003 by the German Bundestag after lengthy debate over whether to commemorate all victims of the Nazis with one monument or separately. Current research suggests the Nazis convicted 54,000 men and women of homosexual acts and killed about 7,000 in concentration camps.
