Marulanda led Latin America's oldest insurgency for nearly 40 years. Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos said his death closed a chapter for the FARC, which had only brought suffering, violence and death to the country. It is hoped that the leader's death will lead to the release of many, long-term hostages.
