Taiwan has inaugurated its new president, Ma Ying-jeou, a former Taipei mayor and Harvard graduate who has promised to seek greater economic cooperation with rival China.
Ma, a Nationalist KMT candidate, takes over from Chen Shui-bian. In his eight years as president, Chen's pro-independence policies had often led to friction with Beijing, which regards Taiwan as a renegade province dating back to a split in 1949. Ma has vowed not to negotiate with Beijing about unification with China.
