Serbian leader calls snap polls ...
Serbia's PM Kostunica stands down ... chosen a clear path towards Europe. Projections by independent monitors indicate that the Democrats and their pro-European Union allies won 39 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for the ultra-nationalist Radical Party, which favours closer ties with Russia. Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's Democratic Party of Serbia took around 11 percent, which could put him in a position to determine who forms the next government. The snap elections were called after the coalition of Kostunica's and Tadic's parties fell apart over the unilateral declaration of independence by the former Serbian province of Kosovo earlier this year. Most EU countries have recognised Kosovo as an independent state.
