The most recent rocket attack affecting Czech troops in Basra occurred in January, when two Czechs were wounded. One Czech soldier has died in Iraq so far. Along with another two Czechs, he was injured in a road accident some 150 km southeast of Baghdad in May 2003, and he succumbed to the injuries. Another four Czech troops were wounded in a road accident in the neighbouring Kuwait in 2005. A total of 99 Czech soldiers operate in Iraq at present. They protect the main entry to the international forces base in Basra. Last Wednesday, a Czech soldier died in Afghanistan when his armoured vehicle hit a mine. His four colleagues suffered wounds. Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek unexpectedly visited the Czech contingent in Afghanistan on Thursday, in reaction to the tragic incident.
