The Lebanese army has warned that its unity will be threatened if the political crisis in Beirut continues after strikes demanding wage increases turned violent. The division of the army, seen as one of Lebanon's most neutral institutions, along sectarian lines in 1976 was a key moment in Lebanon's descent into civil war. Meanwhile, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah called the crackdown by the Lebanese government on its activities, a declaration of war. Lebanon has been without a head of state for five months because of the internal power struggle between Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's government and the pro-Syrian opposition.
