Israel has begun marking the 60th anniversary of its foundation in 1948.
Wednesday's anniversary festivities started with a flag-raising ceremony at Jerusalem's Mount Herzl followed by fireworks and nationwide celebrations. Security forces were on high alert amid concerns Palestinian militants could launch attacks. Israeli had imposed a security lockdown on the occupied West Bank earlier in the week.
