Shortly afterwards, Karzai appeared on national television and said that security forces had foiled the attack and that several suspects had been arrested. A spokesman for the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. He told reporters that the attack did not directly target Karzai, but was designed to show that the Taliban was capable of striking high-profile targets.
